Nonprofit Merrick, Inc., Celebrates Ten Years at Vadnais Heights Location

Providing adults with disabilities meaningful work and life enrichment

VADNAIS HEIGHTS, November 25, 2013, Merrick, Inc., a Vadnais Heights based nonprofit with the mission to empower adults with disabilities celebrated a milestone of ten years at their energy-efficient building located on Labore Road last week.

The building architect, Lars Glockzin, was on hand and remarked, “This project meant a lot to me. I worked with the clients and staff on almost all aspects of design. The end result is an amazing building with accessible design features that really do make a difference.” Features like wide hallways so two people using wheelchairs can pass each other easily; skylights bringing in natural light; and bright welcoming colors are a few of the design choices inspired by conversations with clients and staff.

The celebration on November 19, 2013 held onsite at Merrick consisted of a slideshow with highlights of the past decade, the unveiling of a commemorative poster marking the occasion, and of course, cake! Board of Trustees President Jackie O’Connell, former board member Dan Kuechenmeister, and several staff and clients enjoyed celebrating the anniversary together.

TenYear PressRelease webExecutive Director John Wayne Barker said, “Almost daily we are reminded how having a clean, safe, and respected building reinforces a positive attitude among clients and employees that promotes their engagement and satisfaction. We continue to have other programs tour our building to inspire their projects and feel good about having a building that saves over 50% in utility costs and has no harmful emissions to the air.”

Merrick, Inc., is a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, licensed by the Department of Human Services providing 375 adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities meaningful work options, life enrichment activities, and therapeutic programs. In addition to the energy efficient facility in Vadnais Heights, they operate a second program site for Adult Day and Memory Care services in downtown North St. Paul.
