A Perfect Fit | Lasean’s Story

Lasean loves plastic—especially recycling it. At Merrick, Inc., that passion has found a meaningful home. Since 2010, Lasean has played an important role in Merrick’s Plastic Recycling Program, helping divert more than one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills each year. His dedication reflects not only his own pride in the work, but Merrick’s commitment to creating opportunities that benefit both people and the community.
However, Lasean wasn’t always a plastic enthusiast. Early on, he joined a work crew at a hair salon, where he handled laundry and light janitorial tasks. Although he quickly learned the job, his fast pace sometimes led to a dip in quality, and the calm, quiet atmosphere of the salon simply wasn’t the right fit for his high energy. When the crew was laid off in December 2008, it opened the door for Lasean to explore new opportunities that better suited his strengths.
Over the next several months, Lasean rotated through a variety of jobs in the community and at Merrick. With encouragement from this job coach, he embraced every opportunity that came his way, discovering that he thrived in hands-on, physically demanding roles such as washing vans, collecting plastic, or assembling cardboard boxes.
By late 2009, Lasean began working daily with the baling crew, quickly proving himself to be an invaluable team member. In early 2010, he became a permanent member of the crew, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Today, Lasean arrives each morning ready to get started. Much of his day is spent loading plastic and hospital blue wrap into vertical balers. The work requires focus, consistency, and care—qualities Lasean brings every day. Nearly 20 years in, he remains deeply committed, carefully checking materials for contaminants and always willing to step in and help his crewmates.
Beyond his strong work ethic, Lasean helps shape the culture of Merrick’s recycling team. During quieter moments between plastic drop-offs, he brings laughter and humor to the floor, lifting spirits and strengthening connections. Known for his playful jokes and kind heart, Lasean is someone coworkers know they can count on—both for a laugh and for support.
After almost two decades with Merrick’s Plastic Recycling Program, Lasean shows no signs of slowing down. Through meaningful work, lasting friendships, and the chance to make a real difference, Merrick has given Lasean a place to thrive. And should his goals ever change, he knows Merrick will continue to support him—just as it has throughout his journey.
