A New Chapter for Willow Lake

In February 2026, Merrick’s Willow Lake Life Enrichment Program launched a new three-department structure designed to better support the unique needs of clients. The reorganization created three specialized departments: Care Support Services, which supports individuals with higher support needs; Innovative Services, which serves individuals who benefit from additional behavioral supports; and Empowerment Services, which is designed for retired clients seeking meaningful engagement and community.
The change was the result of several years of growth and learning. Since opening in November 2022, Willow Lake has expanded from 76 participants to more than 120 and introduced new services, including a dedicated Memory Care program in March 2025.
Prior to the new department model, clients rotated between activity rooms throughout the day. Today, each department has its own dedicated space, providing greater consistency, comfort, and opportunities for meaningful engagement.
“Our goal was to create smaller, more structured settings that better support each client’s individual needs,” said Jenn Wold, Assistant Program Director of Care Support Services.
While the transition required an adjustment period for some clients, staff have already observed positive results in the six months since the reorganization. Smaller group sizes and fewer transitions have created a calmer environment, while employees have benefited from supporting a consistent group of individuals, leading to stronger relationships and a deeper understanding of individuals’ needs.
Each department has also developed its own unique identity, fostering a strong sense of community. The Care Support Services team, for example, proudly calls itself the “Care Bears” and has decorated its space with Care Bear-inspired décor. Clients are also playing a larger role in planning activities, helping shape experiences that reflect their interests and preferences.
Since leasing the Willow Lake space in August 2022, both the facility and the program have grown and changed in meaningful ways. Guided by a commitment to providing exceptional services, Willow Lake will continue adapting to meet clients’ changing needs while creating meaningful opportunities for connection, growth, and engagement.
