At His Own Pace, On His Own Terms | Larry’s Story

Larry’s journey with Merrick began in 2018. Like many clients, he started on the work floor, where he was assigned a variety of assembly, packaging, and kitting projects. From day one, Larry was eager to prove himself to be a valued member of Merrick’s workforce.
As staff got to know Larry, they quickly recognized that learning some work-floor tasks would require some extra time and patience. Due to paralysis on the right side of his body, Larry completes tasks using only his left hand. While many of his peers perform assembly work with two hands, Larry accomplishes the same task one-handed.
While staff saw the challenges he faced, Larry saw something different. For him, adapting to tasks was simply part of everyday life. He never minded taking longer to complete a project. What mattered most was having the opportunity to do the work.
With encouragement from staff, adaptive equipment, and plenty of practice, Larry eventually mastered packing x-ray bags for Ferlic Filter, which became his primary role on the work floor. Although some tasks remained difficult, Larry never stopped working to improve. He continued practicing new tasks whenever he had the chance, inspiring staff with his determination and positive attitude.
Larry’s determination extended beyond the work floor. He could often be seen walking the halls of Merrick as he worked toward another personal goal: increasing his mobility and spending more time out of his wheelchair. Staff affectionately referred to his wheelchair as the “Purple Cadillac,” a nickname that never failed to make Larry laugh. Along the way, his friendly demeanor and quick sense of humor made him a familiar and welcome presence. Many staff looked forward to seeing Larry on his daily walks and sharing a laugh or conversation.
In 2025, Larry transitioned to Merrick’s Alternative Services (AS) program, which combines recreational and employment opportunities. Today, he continues packing x-ray bags and completing other piece-rate work. On recreation days, however, Larry’s competitive side shines through. Whether he’s playing UNO or BINGO, he enjoys the challenge and loves beating both his friends and staff whenever he gets the chance.
As he looks toward the future, Larry has considered retirement, but his commitment to work remains strong.
Larry’s outlook on life is perhaps best captured in his own words: “I’m proud to be alive. I live where I want to live. I work where I want to work.” Despite the challenges he faces, Larry remains focused on what matters most—living life on his own terms. Whether he’s packing x-ray bags, challenging friends to UNO, or cruising the halls in his “Purple Cadillac,” Larry reminds us that determination and perseverance can open doors to new possibilities. We are proud that Merrick has been part of his journey, supporting his goals and helping ensure he has the opportunity to work, connect with others, and make choices about the life he wants to lead.
